Every IT budget eventually collides with the same tension: nobody wants to waste resources that still work, and nobody has time to run a resale operation on the side. kHouse has spent most of its history as a company on the resale side of that problem — we buy back the equipment we sold, and most of it, our own numbers say 85%, finds a second owner rather than a recycling stream.
Two ways to take the value back
Customers choose between optimising for environmental impact or for maximum payout. The environmental option puts the same resources behind a product that nets out close to break-even for us but has a strong resale life ahead of it. Neither option is subsidised by cutting corners on the process itself.
The eight steps
Inventory first — CPU, memory, storage, OS, whatever the equipment needs identified, which we can do for a customer who does not have the time. A valuation follows before anything is collected, so the customer knows what to expect and can schedule pickup. Collection itself is handled personally wherever possible, with no third party in the chain, since the data has not been erased yet at that point.
Arrival is checked against the inventory list, with any discrepancy reported back. Reconditioning follows: the equipment is tagged to the originating customer so nothing gets lost in handling, data is erased, and every external and internal trace of the previous owner is removed — switches get reset and reloaded with a fresh OS. Testing happens before resale, not after, and failures get reported back rather than sold on.
Sale is the step customers see, with a report back on what the batch realised — invoice, trade toward new or refurbished equipment, or donation. Customers can also choose to keep and redeploy their own equipment instead, with a service agreement to extend its working life. The process ends with a sustainability certificate showing the raw materials saved.
Why the erasure standard matters
kHouse does not use the Blancco erasure standard — the method in use is roughly three times stronger and takes three to five times longer, in exchange for a materially higher confidence level. Combined with a multi-decade security clearance history working with authorities, defence, and operators of essential services, the erasure step is treated as a security control, not a formality.
